As I am away in China, teaching church leaders and pastors God’s word, I am once again encouraged to see the simple faith and hunger for God’s word of these people. Many of them come to these Bible retreats having travelled vast distances travelling on dangerous, rough roads in less than comfortable transport. They sit on small wooden stools or plastic chairs, the kind we use for children, soaking up God’s word for 6-8 hours a day for a whole week. They eat basic food, often gleaned from the fields in the area. They sleep on the floor at night and then the next day do it all again. It is so encouraging to see their appetite for God’s word and their willingness to learn.
I am reminded of the words of Peter to the early church “As newborn babies crave the pure milk of the Word, so that you may grow up in your salvation”. It is here in China that I see this hunger for God’s word which makes my trip worthwhile. Let us who have so many privileges, and every possible comfort, not neglect our study of God’s word. Let us constantly remember the words of Jesus “man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”.
