I once read an article that said that the Hallmark greeting card company gave free cards to USA prison inmates on Mother’s Day and also on Father’s Day. It noted that that Mother’s Day cards would run out and they would have to supply more, but the Father’s Day cards were hardly used and there were boxes left over.

It says a lot about how important a good relationship with our fathers is and the disastrous results a poor relationship with our fathers can lead to later in life.

But, regardless of your background or earthly father, the Bible says that through faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, we can call God, “Father”.

In John 20:17 Jesus said that he is going to his Father and our Father. God is our heavenly Father. He loved us even before we were born and then he showed his love by sending Jesus to die on the cross to bring us back to him.

An unknown author once said, “A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall, but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes, but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed and has faith in you even when you fail.

Let’s strive to be that kind of father!

This Father’s Day let us trust God to be our father and thank him for being the ultimate Father.
