In a recent Bible study we came across a challenging passage that has been occupying my thinking.
Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
The challenge is that as Christians, we are to constantly be giving ourselves to God and his service as living, effective sacrifices. God does not want dead sacrifices as in the Old Testament; he wants us to live for him in our changing world.
As I have reflected on this call I have come to see that it challenges us to re-evaluate ourselves in the light of the steady decline of social morality. If you think back for a moment and consider how far society has drifted in its morality and social behaviour in the last 10-15 years, we would have been shocked at what it considers acceptable today.
My challenge is not to allow this insidious decline in moral and social values to become part of my life. As the slow trickle down in morality is embraced as the new norm for society it must not and cannot be allowed to become our norm. As Christians we must ever be giving ourselves afresh and anew to the Lord and his service and glory. We must keep ourselves clean and ready for his service.
