Today we will look at a very simple, yet profound metaphor that Jesus uses for living the Christian life. He calls us Salt and Light. I have been amazed and challenged as I have reflected on the significance and far-reaching application of these 2 simple metaphors for our Christian lives.
What has struck me is that both of them do not make a sound when they are being effective. They simply behave as they were designed to behave. I am not suggesting that we do not verbally witness to others, but what I do want to point out is the power of presence, the significant impact of just being Christian in a non-Christian society.
Both salt and light hardly need to make their presence known, but their absence is very evident. There is a significant impact that the Christian makes by simply living for God where they are. Do not underestimate the impact of a quiet consistent Christ-centred life. I am grateful to God for an older couple who simply lived a godly life in my teenage years. Their humble, simple, Christ -centred life, acted as a shining light for me pointing me to Christ. Their devotion to God and purity of life was like salt in a wound to me. It made me aware of my need for cleansing and a fresh start.
Jesus does not ask us to try to be salt and light. He says we “are” salt and light. I encourage you to be what you are. Where God has put you be salt that purifies and light that shows the way to Christ.
