It is with a deep sense of sadness that I have read of the fall and disgrace of an international Christian leader, who has been exposed for his ungodly behaviour and sin. This has devastated a lifetime reputation and has brought immense pain to his extended family. It has also rocked the faith of many Christians and raised questions to those looking on.
As I have reflected on the huge damage this has caused the name of our Lord, I have been reminded yet again that we must never look to men and women to set the standard for us. No matter how competent, capable, gifted and charismatic he or she may be, they are at their best open to failure and compromise.
The bible has some pretty clear warnings that Satan is always on the lookout to destroy the ministry and reputation of Christians and so too, destroy the reputation of the Christian faith. There is only One who we can look to and trust; only One who is holy and pure and uncompromising; only One who is worth following and will never have double standards.
The bible says, “Fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith”.
In my disappointment and sorrow over the fall of a great Christian leader, I have been reminded that our Lord Jesus is to be the one and only example and mentor. We must heed His invitation – Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of the earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
