From Ben – 16 July 2017
This week we were thrilled to see Auckland central city grind to a halt as 1000s of people jammed Queens Street and the Viaduct to welcome home the America’s Cup, after a 14-year absence. Emirates Team New Zealand achieved an amazing feat by winning the 2017 event. This must go down in history as one of the great sporting achievements to be remembered and celebrated. They won despite having far less resources, money and backing than their opponents, Oracle U.S.A.
This event has rightly been described as a David and Goliath contest. Team N.Z had such limited resources that they struggled to pay the team their wages on a weekly basis. They had to draw on people with lots of Kiwi ingenuity and against all odds it paid off.
As I reflect on this historic event I can’t help but see certain foundational principles at work, which also apply to the church. We, in the church, are also outnumbered and have limited resources, but when we stand together and trust each other, relying on the Lord to guide us, we will achieve the impossible. The church has amazing potential, if we pull together under the Lord’s guidance. Our achievement will not be celebrated by a street parade, but one day when we stand before God on Judgment Day we will hear those welcome words of commendation “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
