On Friday we had the funeral of Barbara Wakelin at our church. Barbara had been a regular worshipper at G.P.C. for over 20 years. In recent years she had been at a rest home and unable to attend regularly. As we reflected on her life we remembered Barbara’s generous spirit. She was not a wealthy person, but she loved to give small gifts to people. I too received a number of small gifts from her over the years. She even made a little goody bag for me when I went on my 2nd trip to China. The bag held things I might need like hand sanitizer, lollies and tissues. It was this kind of care and interest in people that Babs was known for. She used to walk with a walking frame and invariably she would have lots of little bags of things for other people tucked away in it.
Babs reminds me of a lady in Acts 9, called Dorcas. She also died and the church ladies gathered around her bed and held up blankets and jackets and clothing she had made and given away. She was not wealthy either, but was generous with what she had and used her gifts to serve others.
The question I ask both myself and you is, what will people hold up that will show our generosity and kindness when God calls us home? What tangible evidence will there be of our generosity?
