From Ben – 2 August 2015

In one of the Bible studies I lead, we have started on a year-long study of the book of Revelation. As we have begun Chapter 3 we have been confronted by the repeated call to be spiritually vigilant and alert. Chapter 3 is addressed to the church at Sardis that had become lazy, docile and complacent in their Christian walk. The Lord calls on them to wake up from this dangerous sleep-walking and return to their earlier commitment and loyalty to the Lord.

As we studied this challenging call to wake up, I had to ask myself, “Is this what the Lord is saying to me today? Have I become docile, indifferent and complacent? Am I sleep-walking in my spiritual life?”

Can I challenge you to ask yourself the same question? Have you drifted and become casual, complacent, and languid in your Christian walk? Have you drifted from your original zeal and fervency? Do you still pray with faith and read the Bible expectantly? Do you still look for opportunities to witness and serve others as Jesus would want?

The encouraging truth is that this church as Sardis was given the opportunity to return and pick up where they had left off, and we too have this opportunity today.

Rev 3:3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.
