How embarrassing! After 10 years of boating and diligently remembering to put the drainage plug into the boat before launching, this week I forgot!
It did not take long for my boat to start taking on water. I noticed that strangely the carpets were very wet, and then to my shock, I realised the boat was sinking. As I was still on the launch ramp I ran to my car and managed to pull it out before it got too waterlogged. To add insult to injury a fellow boatie walking by laughingly said it had happened to him as well.
Sue, who was with me, said there must be a sermon illustration in there somewhere. I could talk about not rushing, or humiliation, but I think the lesson that came to mind is “the boat is to be in the water, not water in the boat!”
We, as Christians, are to live in the world as salt and light, but we are not to let the world live in us. We are not to imbibe and take into our lives the values, standards and thinking of our godless society.
Just as my boat was in jeopardy of sinking, so too an unguarded life will soon come to ruin. We are called to be in the world, but not like the world.
1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Fatheris not in them
