From Ben – 20 February 2022

In my private devotions and personal Bible reading I have been slowly working through the gospel of John. Although I have read through it a number of times in the past, I have discovered light, truth and deep blessing from it. God’s word is a deep mine that never stops yielding rich treasure.

In chapter 20, the resurrection account, I was struck by the tenacious and resolute faith of Mary, who was one of the ladies who visited the tomb early on the Sunday morning. What struck me was that when she saw the tomb was open, she ran and reported to the disciples that her “Lord” had been moved. By this stage she had witnessed the rejection of Jesus and the horrific crucifixion and had heard reports of His burial. Despite all this He remained her Lord, in fact, twice more in this passage she refers to Him as her Lord. She had not lost hope or been tempted to downgrade her belief that He was her Lord and Master.

This is the type of faith that is rewarded by Jesus. No wonder He met her personally outside the tomb some time later and addressed her by name (v16). The lesson for us in this is to be strong, resolute and unmoved in our belief in His Lordship, despite the onslaught of unbelief and scepticism in society today. As Mary clung to the belief in His lordship, despite all that had happened to Him, let us stand in her sandals and also be firm, and immovable.
