From Ben – 26 February 2017
This week we will start on a journey that I have been preparing for and looking forward to for a long time. We will start to study the letter of Colossians in our morning services. This is one of the shortest N.T. letters. It only has 4 chapters, yet it is one of the most powerful letters, describing the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ and what he has done for us on the cross. The reason this short letter is so strong is that it was written by the apostle Paul while in prison in Rome around AD 60.
The church at Colossae was being infiltrated by teachers who were saying that Christ did not give us all the fullness that God has for us; there is more. They went on to claim deeper knowledge and fuller insights into the ways of God. If that was not enough, they added the need to keep all sorts of dietary laws and religious holy days to come to a complete insight to God’s ways. It was these corrupting teachings, which still surface today, which are addressed and stripped of all validity in this hard-hitting, inspiring letter.
As we start this journey together, may I encourage you to find a quiet place and read through this letter. See it as God’s word to you. I hope you will be half as blessed by its content as I have been.
