In this week’s message about the cost of discipleship for the Lord Jesus, there is a lovely and comforting illustration that Jesus gives. He said, “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent, yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Heavenly Father knowing about it.” How wonderful to know that our Father knows all about us and all that happens to us. If He cares so much for the cheapest of birds (2 for a cent), won’t He care much more for us?
Luke gives a similar illustration of Jesus, but he goes a step further and says, “Are not 5 sparrows sold for 2 cents, yet not one falls to the ground without God knowing about it” What Luke is saying is that 2 cents buys 4 sparrows and a fifth one is put in as a free gift. Not even the worthless (free) one hops to the ground without the full knowledge of God.
Let us see the gold in this – God cares for us so much that He did not spare His only Son but gave Him up for us. So great is His love and affection for us.
However you feel today, my Christian friend, draw great comfort from the fact that you are loved beyond measure. Your Heavenly Father knows all about you and there is just nothing this world can dish up that will cause Him to overlook you.
The old song goes – His eye is on the sparrow and He watches over me.
