Today is the day that we celebrate the mothers in our church. We reflect on the enormous contribution all mothers continue to make for their children. It is no light comment to say we owe our mothers a huge debt of gratitude.

As my daughter and her family live with us so that we may help with our twin granddaughters I have been reminded once again of the enormous commitment and time investment that a mother gives to her young babies. There is the constant feeding, changing and care that goes on day and night, and in the small hours of the morning as the rest of us are warmly tucked up in bed. Those 2 are weak, dependant and vulnerable, needing constant nurture and love.

You may be interested that God casts Himself in Scripture, not only as our heavenly Father, but also as a nurturing mother. Matt 23:37 Jesus said, “ How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings” and Isaiah 49:15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”  As a caring mother loves, nurtures, provides and protects her child, so the Lord does to us.

Children are often oblivious of the endless hours of nurture and love extended towards them as they grow up. We too, as Christians will never know the endless protection and nurture of our Heavenly Father towards us.

Jer 31:3 I have loved you with an everlasting love says the Lord.
