From Ben – 10 May 2015

I was discussing with Sue what I should write about this Mother’s day, and she suggested that I speak about my mother.

My mother was born in the U.K. She played a part in WW II, serving with a team of ladies that sent coded messages to British war ships. She immigrated to S.A. in her 20s and married my father. They were married for 15 years and then sadly divorced.

She was not a Christian during my childhood and although a good, kind and caring person, showed no interest in the things of God. She never remarried but worked hard to provide for my 2 sisters who lived with her.

When she retired she moved to the town where I was ministering and she started attending church and really enjoyed it. As time went on it became evident that God was at work in her life. Just after her 70th birthday she developed an aggressive cancer of the liver. During her illness I often sat beside her reading large portions of Scripture which comforted her. I do believe she was saved before she died.

It was a privilege I will never forget, helping her prepare for heaven. I took her funeral service with strong confidence that she went home to be with the Lord. I have few early memories of her as I spend half my childhood without her, but I am eternally grateful for the privilege of being both her son and her pastor.
